The Kennedy Scholars Fellowship Program

Main content start

The Kennedy Scholars Fellowship Program at Stanford recognizes students who embody civic values and skills that we wish to see in our public leaders. They express a lasting concern for the civic institutions that sustain liberal democracies, and exemplify the traits of outstanding citizens committed to their communities. It is named in honor of Justice Anthony Kennedy ‘58, whose exemplary life in public service is illustrative of these values.

Rising seniors who exemplify these traits are nominated by instructors to apply to the program. Selected fellows participate in a year-long seminar with weekly readings, cohort discussions, and conversations with prominent guests reflecting on civic leadership from a humanistic perspective – from classical and historical to contemporary leaders and the qualities of leadership. Fellows are offered additional mentorship, civic engagement, research funding, and community-building opportunities throughout the year, including the fellowship kick-off visit to Washington D.C.

*Beginning in 2028, nominees will be required to have completed – or be on track to complete – the Minor in Civic Thought and Practice.
